Every hunter has at least one story they’d rather tell after a couple of beers. The kind of story where everything went so perfectly wrong that all you can do is laugh — preferably once you’re safely back in the truck.

We dug through Reddit’s r/Hunting and pulled out five of the funniest hunting fails we could find. No lessons, no tips. Just pure, unfiltered chaos from the woods.

1. “Hey, Look at That Porcupine Hole!”

A hunter from Michigan tells the story of a botched shot on a buck that left a blood trail he tracked all day Saturday. Sunday, he brought a buddy to help. After hours of searching, he spotted a downed tree with a hole in the roots — about the size of a five-gallon bucket.

“Hey, look at that porcupine hole!” he yelled to his friend.

He turned back toward the hole. And out of it shot a black bear. Not a porcupine. A bear.

The bear bolted right. The hunter bolted left. Both at roughly the same speed. They never found the buck, but he’s been a lot more careful about identifying holes in the ground ever since.

2. The Hornet Nest Under the Stand

A Croatian hunter brought his wife along for a roe deer sit. He was climbing up to his stand, carefully scanning left and right for any deer in the field. Suddenly, his wife grabbed his leg and hissed: “You idiot, look in front of you!”

Half a meter from his face hung a European hornet nest about 40 centimeters long. They’d built it directly underneath his stand.

In his own words: “My ass got so tight you couldn’t pass a dental floss through my butt crack.” Slowly, very slowly, they backed down and got the hell out. Lucky for them the hornets were calm — otherwise they’d be jumping from four meters up.

3. The Guy Who Confused a Treestand With a Toilet

This one’s a Reddit classic that shows up in every thread about embarrassing hunting moments. A hunter on public land got hit with an urgent, non-negotiable biological situation. Miles from civilization, zero bathrooms in sight. He found a nice big oak tree, leaned against it, and… handled business.

After a few intense minutes, he glanced to the side. Attached to that oak tree was a ladder. Leading up to a treestand. He’d been doing his business directly beneath someone else’s hunting spot the whole time.

The worst part? He never found out if anyone was sitting in it.

4. The Human Potato Sack

Same Croatian hunter, different disaster. This time he was woodcock hunting when his foot got tangled in a massive blackberry bush — Croatia grows them huge. He went down face-first, describing it as “like throwing a sack of potatoes.”

His face was so covered in mud he says he looked like Arnold in Predator after the mud camouflage scene. He pulled out his phone to check the damage. Instead, he took a selfie. And sent it to his wife.

“God, how she laughed.”

5. The Homeless Guy on All Fours

The same hunter had another unforgettable encounter. Sitting in his stand, waiting for a roe buck, when a man walked onto the field below — long hair, ripped jeans, dirty T-shirt. Looked homeless. He stopped, five meters below the stand, and just stared at the hunter for 15 seconds.

Then, without a word, he walked into the thickest patch of bushes — blackberries, hawthorn, hornbeam — dropped to all fours, and disappeared like a dog into the undergrowth. Gone.

The hunter laughed so hard he packed his gear and went home. To this day, he has no idea what that was. Maybe it was the bear from story #1 in disguise.

So What’s the Lesson? There Isn’t One.

No profound takeaways. No “top 5 tips to avoid embarrassment in the woods.” Sometimes the best part of hunting is what goes wrong — because those are the stories that stick around for years.

Got your own hunting fail that still makes you cringe? Drop it in the comments. We promise we’ll laugh with you, not at you. Probably.
